Guaimaca Model School Visit

We had another wonderful greeting today.  Some of the children were waving Honduran flags and some were waving American flags.

Mom is saying, "We are right here."
There is a concrete wall surrounding the school with electrified barbed wire around the top of it.  But the walls were painted with beautiful murals that were also educational.  This is one of the model schools that has come a long way since "Friends United" began working with the teachers!

Love these sweet children!

Once again the children performed for us!  The musicians played the Honduran National Anthem and the United States National Anthem.  They did a great job!

This is Paulette Baker.  She has been travelling with Friends United since the beginning and she is fluent in Spanish.  Paulette has taught Kinder for over 30 years and has been coming to Honduras and teaching teachers for many of those years.  Last year she lost her husband to cancer and the teachers love her so much they dedicated their new model library in her husband's memory.

This is the little library for the whole school.  I've got to admit, I shed a few tears over this part of the tour. I have way more books in my classroom back home than in all of the classrooms and libraries I have visited in the last two days.  My goal is to find a way to bring more books to the children in Honduras!  My other goal is to learn some Spanish!

We brought some more books for the library!  These were donated by "Friends United.".

Paulette is reading one of the new books to a student!  I want to be able to do that next year!

They also dedicated the new computer lab.  This lab had 4 computers.  I'm not sure they actually work.

Charlotte Ruoff, president and founder of "Friends United," and I are giving school supplies, donated by Trailridge Elementary students in Lee's Summit, to one of the Honduran teachers.  She was so grateful!

A sweet little boy showing off an apple he made out of recycled plastic bottles, he also had a spoon he made into a doll.  You notice the bag of cans and bottles he collected to make more treasures?  He loved showing off all his creations!

This beautiful trophy was also made out of recycled bottles.

Notice the chair in the foreground made out of an aluminum can.  It was very sharp around the edges, but very clever.

A little boy walking past the school leading his horse.  I've noticed that horses are the mode of transportation for a lot of people.

A little cutie smiling at me from the house across the street from the school.  He was adorable!

My daughter Kara hamming it up with a couple of local children!  The kids love her!

  1. Jayne,

I am so glad you started this blog, I have been checking in on you every couple of days to see how your mission is going! That library was sad as was the computer lab! We just don't realize how good we have things sometimes. Paulette Baker taught in Independence, we shared our kids together at summer school so I visited with her a few times as well as at our kindergarten team meetings. She was/is a great teacher. Keep up the good work and enjoy those children.
