School in Zambrano, Honduras

After the model kindergarten visit we made a surprise visit to one of the first schools that Friends United visited.  It had been many years since they had been here to visit so we stopped in to see how things were going.  It took a while to get someone to come and open the locked iron gate.  The security in schools and everywhere  is impressive.  Most homes even have electrified barbed wire at the top of a large cement wall.  Our hotels and most businesses have security men with rifles guarding them.

The children at this school were so excited to see us.  They kept calling us gringos and wanting us to see what they were doing.

The kids really loved my dad.  He got lots of attention. I see now why my parents keep coming back to Honduras!

My daughter Kara made the mistake of picking up one of the kids.  As soon as she did that they all wanted her to pick them up.  She got a work out here.

A typical 3rd grade classroom.  There were 35 students all packed in together.  Each child had a notebook and a pen or pencil.  I didn't see any books in the classroom at all, not even a textbook.
